Table Mountain is the landmark of Cape Town. It is a majestic mountain that can be seen from every direction and which is loved by all Captonians and tourists. It is currently also up for nomination for one of the new natural wonders of the world.
The peak of the mountain is 1067 metre higher than the sea level and Table Mountain boasts a total length of 3 km. From the top, you will have an amazing view of the entire Cape Town area. There are many ways up Table Mountain but the most comfortable way would be to take the cable car. From here you will have a 360 degree view of Cape Town as you are being driven up the mountain. The first time the cable car was used was in 1929 and nowadays is transporting around 600 000 people up the mountain each month. Once you arrive at the top, you will be able to go to the souvenir shop, have something to eat at the restaurant and walk one of the many walking trails that are available.
For the more adventurous tourists, there are also many hiking trails up the mountain: 350 to be exact. These vary in difficulty: some are suited for children and amateurs, other hiking trails require a bit more stamina and fitness.
On the other side of Table Mountain, you will find the Botanical Garden of Cape Town. Here you will find another hiking trail but the Botanical Garden should be on your things to do when visiting Cape Town. You will find many different kind of plants here and many activities that are fun for the entire family.
The area between Table Mountain and the Lion’s Head is called Kloof Nek. There are also many hiking trails that lead from here to Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. The way up Lion’s Head is very enjoyable and is not very strenuous. At the top (which is around 500 meters high) you will find a stunning 360 degree view of Cape Town as well.
