Bali and its Festivals
Religion plays a central role in the life of every Balinese family. The island has hundreds of temples, for which each and every one has a temple anniversary, known as Odalan. On this day, the villagers visit the temple for prayers and socializing. It can be considered a community event to bring the people together and promotes good feelings between villagers.
With the Balinese Hindu religion comes many daily practices such as placing offerings such as trays of flowers called Canang Sari in temples, shrines and symbolic locations to ward off evil and please the Gods. Nyepi Day, which is the Balinese New Year is a day that is spent in silence in reflective prayer and meditation.
The days before Nyepi however provide many opportunities for a tourist to witness ceremonies and rituals including the noisy and colourful Ogoh-Ogoh procession which happens one day before Nyepi, on Melasti Day. This procession is a colourful display of the creativity of the Balinese where towering papier mache ‘monsters’ are paraded through the town in noisy processions in efforts to chase away any evil.
Galungan is another major festival for the Balinese which at the end of 10 days is marked by Kuningan Day. This festival occurs every six months so you will have the opportunity to see it in another half year if you miss the first round. During this time you will see the Barong Dance procession which goes through the village performing in front of shops and houses as an act of purification. Cremations are another village affair where the entire family and friends of the deceased are involved. The body is carried from the home grounds through the village to the cremation site where it is place in a towering sarcophagus and burnt to the ground.
Diving Snorkeling and more!
Bali has some of the most colourful and interesting sea life you will ever see. Well known dive sites are located in Amed and Tulamben where there are ship wrecks, in Menjangan Island in the North West, and Pandang Bali and Lembongan Island in the East to name a few. Nusa Dua and Sanur are ideal for snorkeling but there are many other areas as well.
Visit the Volcanoes
Indonesia has hundreds of volcanoes and Bali has some of its own famous ones as well. Kintamani town is where you will see the 2800m high Mount Bali, a popular tourist destination in Bali.
The volcano has a large caldera lake and it is possible to go on a sunrise hike to the top of Mount Batur if you can wake up early enough! Mount Agung, the location of Bali’s largest and most sacred temple, Puri Besakih, is Bali’s highest and most sacred mountain at 3142m high.
Pura Besakih, the Mother Temple is where Bali’s most important ceremonies are held and worth visiting if you have the opportunity to go on an East Bali tour especially in April when the temple has its anniversary.
Adventure on the Land
Apart from the southern tourist towns, Bali is an island still very much in its natural state compared to other tourist destinations. You will soon realise that there are many locations that provide the ideal terrain for exciting adventure activities. Bali is not only Kuta and Nusa Dua. Travel north and you will find out what the real Bali has to offer – culture, spectacular scenery and experiences that modern tourist towns with shopping malls are totally devoid of.
The rivers, mountains and jungles are all places where you can experience Bali away from the tourist crowds. White water rafting down the scenic Ayung or down the heart stopping Telaga River rapids is one of the more popular activities for tourists who come to Bali.
A mountain bike ride from Kintamani down to Ubud through the padi fields and small villages with friendly locals is another leisurely activity for families and individuals alike. Bali is home to the Taro Elephant Park, complete with accommodation, activities and elephant fun for all ages. You can ride an elephant through the jungle, marvel at their intelligence and let them make you laugh when you visit the Taro Elephant safari park in Bali.
Quad driving will take you through the jungles and rougher terrain. Canyon tubing where you sit in a floating tube and coast down a river through the jungle is another fun activity. A new attraction, the Bali Safari and Marine Park is a unique blend of wildlife conservation and culture. You will be able to see wildlife in their natural surroundings and learn about the ancient Balinese culture at this tourist attraction.
Do you Love Shopping
Finally what the first thing tourists tend to do on any trip and most certainly to Bali is to shop. You have Kuta Center, Galeria Nusa Dua, Matahari in Legian and Ubud Market where you will find bargains of all sorts. The Balinese are well known for their creative and artistic skills evident in the numerous arts and crafts found throughout the island. Many craft factories are found in Tegallalang and the surrounding area. Skilled silversmiths in the village of Celuk, sell their creations in eclectic shops in Ubud but you will be able to buy their jewelry at slightly better prices.
Sukawati art market is where you will find many of the fabrics used in Balinese clothing as well as hand made crafts such as woven baskets at good prices. Crafts and statues are made from natural products found on Bali such as coconut wood, bamboo and volcanic sand stone. Masks and puppets make interesting gift items. You will also find many unique home decor items such as table runners, lamp shades and wall decorations to give your home a touch of Bali style when you return. Furniture items are often available at attractive prices compared to if you were to purchase them from outside of Bali.
So there you are, a list of many things you can do in Bali. Relax, get fit, have fun, gain new experiences and most of all, a memorable holiday. And if you count them up, you’ve got a lot more than 10 things to do there. This is by no means an exhaustive list but more than enough for a 3 to 7 day trip to this wonderful and magical island of the Gods.

Leaving the city limits behind on your Sydney Getaways and visiting through the Royal National Park via Audley or Waterfall you’re bound to be captivated by the rich beauty of nature that surrounds you.
The abundant native flora of melaleuca’s, acacia’s and tall gums amongst the sandstone landscapes prevail in the first half of the National Park and the sub-tropical palms alongside the flowing waters of the Hacking and the wild calls of the Lyre Bird’s mimicking cries during the latter. This is definitely a place to go slow and enjoy the environment.
In case you are driving this way on the weekend then you must stop and try some of the famous apple pie from the Otford Pantry on Lady Wakehurst Drive just as you exit the national Park. Take a walk across the road and check the view or maybe walk to the beach below and spend some time there.
Enjoy the ocean Panoramas
The main road that leaves Sydney and winds its way through the Royal National Park and southward towards Wollongong and the Illawarra and and by means to Shellharbour and Kiama is now known as the Grand Pacific Drive.
It is especially desirable to take this drive with the roof down on a sunny day but if you don’t happen to have a convertible handy don’t worry because the drive and scenery are just as enjoyable with a roof over your head. The journey will have to be about getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city to a more warming and calming mood of exploring, relaxing and chilling out.
Even if you should not own or have a car handy its good news to know that Cityrail trains run down this lovely stretch of the New South Wales coast through Wollongong, Kiama and on to the sleepy hamlet of Gerringong which happens to be located on the beach just south of Kiama and a few kilometres north of Nowra.
Wonderful Coastal Villages
The small wonderful coastal villages that stretch the 20 odd kilometres or so to Wollongong lay quietly nestled at the base of the escarpment, a lot you’ll find the odd antique/gift shop as well as plenty of cafes, galleries, eateries and fine places to dine.
Some of these villages have their own festivals annually which make for a fun day out, others have regular market stalls, live entertainment stores where you can stock up on supplies, do some window shopping or send a postcard off to family or friends. Of course there are opportunities to do some bush walking, play golf, kick back and relax in a nearby park or spend some quality time soaking up sunrays, swimming or fishing around the many beaches and headlands.
Villages like Shellharbour and Kiama are a top place to visit. Shellharbour has a wonderfully confined main street with boutique shops and a grand pub on the corner opposite the park and harbour.
A typical visit there can mean relaxing with some tasty fish and chips on the grass either in front of the pool or the harbour. A trip to Kiama means visiting the blow hole as the wind and ocean puts on a display of spray that can spout tens of meters into the sky. Again, there is boutique shopping available, markets as well as the holiday park located right on the harbourfront, an ideal location for a
Best Illawarra Accommodation
When en route this way on your getaway journey it’s reassuring to know where you can find clean, affordable accommodation because you’ll want to just be able to drive right to it and unpack without having to search street after street once you’re in town.
There are plenty of great places to enjoy a short or long stay when looking for some Illawarra Accommodation. Things to See and Do
Attractions are plentiful. There are actually many natural attractions such as the look outs perched on top of the escarpment with endless views to the beautiful sandy beaches like Austinmer, North Wollongong and Port Kembla.
If beaches are not your thing you can always spend the day visiting studios and galleries or maybe a museum. Some people enjoy exploring the local vineyards and tasting the great wines that come from this region or browsing the bric-a-brac shops.
Whatever you choose you won’t be disappointed. Lake Illawarra is a holiday makers delight for families as well as romantics. Take a visit and be impressed!

Over the years Amsterdam has become synonymous with liberal attitudes – whether it’s in the form of naked chicks in the red light district, their forward thinking towards homosexual culture or their relaxed laws regarding marijuana. Because of some of these, many parents feel uncomfortable taking their children to the city. That, however, isn’t necessary as the Dutch capital offers much for all tastes and ages.
Because of its flat terrain Amsterdam is a wonderful city to cycle through. Many of the locals use this mode of transportation on a daily basis as it’s cheaper and more practical than to drive or use public transport. On sunny summer days it’s also a wonderful way to get out and feel a fresh breeze in the radiant sunshine. Amsterdam also has many canals that can be used for transportation means, but for the normal visitor this will normally be done as part of a guided tour.
There’s much to see in the city that means all tourists will be enthralled.
Art lovers will be keen to see all the museums in town. There are three world class museums all within touching distance of one another in the Museum Quarter – the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art and the Rijksmuesum.
Art is a predominant factor in all of these venues. The Rijksmuseum houses work by Rembrandt, Steen, van Ruisdael and that ilk. The nearby Van Gogh Museum has the biggest collection of art created by the man equally as famous for his substandard number of ears.
If the Rijksmuseum doesn’t have enough Rembrandt for your liking, the Dutch city also has the Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn house on display. As one of Europe’s greatest known painters, this house gets many visitors each year as people look to find out more about his life and his work. The house contains a collection of more than 250 pieces of original Rembrandt work.
Another famous house in Amsterdam is the one that Anne Frank hid in during the Second World War. Opened to the public in the 60s, the house is still in the condition it was in when the young Jew kept her diary while hiding in the family attic. Frank’s house – also known as the Achterhuise – shows the hiding place and conditions that the young girl experienced.
Of course, it’s not all history and art in Amsterdam. The city is one of the most visited by stag parties, keen to enjoy the locally brewed beers, coffee houses and the hot naked chicks in the red light district. This district centres around Zeedijk Street and as well as brothels and strip shows offers many bars and restaurants to the curious – but not committed – members of the party.

The Peak District in Derbyshire is perfect for family activity breaks because it is so compact. Within a relatively small area there are plenty of places to stay ranging from five star hotels near Chatsworth, to Bed and Breakfast’s, to self catering in a country cottage.
Of course the main activity in the Peak District is walking and the compactness of the area means a lot can be covered in a short time. Even if you have never walked on the hills for leisure this is a good place to start. There
are many circular walks to suit every ability and age group. It is good for families with young children, as they love to walk and see the sheep. Lovely in springtime when there are lambs around.
For the more experienced walker there are the less travelled routes such as Kinder Plateau. The route the whole way around is a very long day’s walk but the varying views rival anywhere in Britain. A very popular walk is to go up Jacobs ladder onto Kinder edge, walk along the edge and back down into Edale. This walk takes you past some amazing stone shapes as good, if not better than any man made sculptures. These massive rocks were washed down from Scotland at the end of the ice age!
Edale, which is the start and end of many walks, is a typical Peak District village and in spite of its many visitors still retains its original character because there have not been any additional new houses. The newest building is an Information Centre, which is a really good place to start your break. There are also a couple of good pubs which welcome walkers, and match their food to a long day on the hills.
Of course walking isn’t the only activity in the Peak District holiday area. There are plenty of centres where you can join a pony trek and there are plenty of bridle paths for the individual horse rider, which can be hired from the numerous stables. It is also very popular with mountain bikers with many paths to share with walkers.
Many people visit the Peak District to hangglide or paraglide from Mam Tor (there are other places too) or there is the gliding club at Huchlow.
Some of the hotels organise sightseeing helicopter rides and one hotel will organise a day out in a classic car complete with picnic. If you really must, there are a few tracks for four-wheel drives but these are not too popular with those who have gone to get away from noise and traffic.
Although it may not strictly count as an activity there are the beautiful houses of Chatsworth and Hadden Hall to visit.
One activity we shouldn’t forget is shopping. There is a very attractive shopping area at Chatsworth, and the lovely town of Bakewell is well worth a trip to just saunter around, market day is good, and of course don’t forget to try Bakewell pudding!

I’m not one for lying in the sun. I am more relaxed and get a better buzz but doing something. So my travel breaks generally involve doing something.
I love adventure travel breaks that maybe more adventurous than some but not as out there as others.
I especially love my short walking breaks.
One walking break I enjoyed was hiking down into the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring and can be overwhelming at 277 miles long 18 miles wide and over a mile deep so you have to pick and plan your trek carefully.
When I did the trek I was told going down is optional but coming back up is mandatory.
I wanted a day’s walk so decided on going down the South Kaibab Trail across the Tonto Trail and then back up the Bright Angel Trail. The total length of the trek was around 13miles.
I set off at daybreak with all the right gear, plenty of water and food and a clearly mapped out route.
It’s better to hike down the Kaibab, as it’s mostly uneven earth steps all the way, and there is little shade or water so hiking it in the morning, when it’s cooler, makes sense.
The South Kaibab Trail is a dramatic ridgeline descent, which gives wonderful panoramic views of the canyon from the start. You have to be a bit careful on some points on the ridge because the wind can be very strong and the ridge can be fairly narrow!
Just beyond where the trail joins the Tonto trail there are toilets. When I did the walk I had to queue to use them because a horse riding party, on their way back up from a nights camping, had stopped for the toilets a minute before me. It was handy for getting someone to take photographs of me next to the Tonto trail sign.
The Tonto Trail is a flat walk across a plateau but it is easy to lose the track as flash floods and wind etc can erode the path and it’s easy to get of course and follow a dry riverbed rather than the track. There are also a couple of places to stop in the shade, which is very welcome as the heat builds.
On the way down I met a few hikers but on the Tonto trail I met no one. If you get lost you could be in trouble because if you lose the trail it would be very difficult to find it again.
When I joined The Bright Angel Trail at Indian gardens there was a lot more people, because this trail is the busiest hiking trail down the canyon. Popular for hikers, campers and mule trains. A well-maintained sloping path, emergency phones, with regular drinking water and covered rest houses all the way up, it is said to be the safest trail in Grand Canyon.
Being able to talk to others on the way back up made it a more pleasant experience and the time to get back up to the rim didn’t seem so long.
How did I feel the next day … fantastic!
And now as I recall the thrill of the Grand Canyon I still feel fantastic.
If you have ever thought of doing this.
Stop thinking and just ,,.
GO DO IT!
I’m glad I did.
