Trekkers need to carry along with them lot of equipments and gears as they need to be well prepared for overcoming all sorts of challenges. Survival kits, compasses, clothes, gears for camping, medicines, shoes and dry food packets are items that every trekker will have in his backpack. Waterproof shoes are advisable for hiking. Special emphasis is paid to shoes to see that they are well fitted and does not produce blisters in the long run. Then there are other items like rain jackets, warm jerseys, sleeping bags, lightweight gloves, sun hat, scarf, sunglasses, innerwear, woolen socks or cotton inner socks, hiking shorts, long pants and thermal wear if needed.

Trekking is walking and applies to journeys made on foot. These journeys are mostly done in places where no other means of transport are available. It may involve walking for a number of days on foot. During trekking, there are always possibilities of having either designated, well laid out routes and then there is another chance of encountering un-charted and un-designated paths also. It could be snowy mountains with trails prepared on them or it could be valleys with no definite paths. You need to be prepared to face all kinds of unforeseen challenges while you are going on a trek or a hike, usually done on mountainous terrains or hills. Trekking can continue for weeks together and it depends on the paths traversed, the complexities of the routes and the final trekkers’ goals.

British explorer Philip de-Beger who is probably best know for his high altitude exploits having led several expeditions to 8,000m peaks in the Himalayas and the karakoram. His other feats include establishing new extreme climbing routes in England, Scotland, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Emirates and Oman. This year he was awarded grants from the mount Everest fund and Shipton Tillman fund for a daring expedition to climb an unclimbed peak high in the karakoram.

He has also had success in the Arctic. In 2009 as part of a small team Philip skied 300 miles unsupported in across frozen sea ice in order to link the two most northern Inuit communities in the Canadian Arctic by ski. He arrived with a day to spare despite having to deal with open water and polar bears.

In February 2012 Philip will be leading an expedition to climb Ojos Del Salado. Ojos is the world highest volcano at 6,892m. This also makes it the highest mountain in Chile and one of the “second seven summits”. The mountain is a serious undertaking. There are only two spaces on the expedition remaining. Potential candidates will need a good level of fitness and drive. The final section before the summit involves a short 30m rock climb so experience of scrambling or basic climbing experience would be advantageous.

For more information check out http://www.expeditioncompany.co.uk/southamerica/southamerica_ojos.html or email us at info@expeditioncompany.co.uk

River rafting requires that you navigate a river, usually comprising of rapids and steep bends seated in a boat. The river selected for river rafting purposes usually has high tides most of the time of the year making it impossibly hard to navigate the course. The primary reason why river rafting has become popular is because it offers adrenaline pumping action for the adventurous people. However there is also ample scope for nature lovers to soak in the beauties of nature while floating along lazily, if the river water is calm in nature. River rafting is ideal for exploring landscapes lying along river ways which are otherwise inaccessible by road. It requires almost no effort from the rider just the ability to swim and to cling on to the boat. River rafting is also extremely environment friendly, considering that you are not depleting natural resources in any form when you engage in this activity.

Traveling to Hawaii offers tourists many options for entertainment, discovery and sightseeing. Hawaii has a tremendously diverse ecosystem spreading from the oceanic costs to the beautiful mountainous uplands. Visitors to Hawaii can scuba dive over rich reefs, view amazing volcanoes and immerse themselves in Polynesian culture. The amazing culture of the Hawaiians survived the onslaught of the modern world and can be seen in throughout the islands. In fact Hawaiian culture even spread after the arrival of the outside world, for example, Hawaiian Tattoos and tiki culture have grown in popularity.

The first Polynesians arrived in Hawaii in double hauled voyaging canoes between 700 – 1000 AD. Entire villages could be moved using these amazing sea going vessels. The ancient Hawaiians were able to explore the vast Pacific in a time when the rest of the world was only able to make boats that stayed close to shore, with the exception of the Scandinavian Vikings. These Polynesian seafarers where masters of Ocean travel guided by stars, sea birds and wave patterns they explored the Pacific and settled on many uninhabited islands. One of the furthest flung was Hawaii, and here on the Hawaiian Islands the Polynesians prospered. They formed a unique society and culture there.

From their Polynesian roots they blossomed into their own people, isolated by thousands of miles of waves. However, their culture wasn’t a static one and it changed over time. The first Hawaiians lived in small villages scattered around the shores of the many Hawaiian Islands but over time the chiefs of these tribes began to consolidate power eventually forming many small kingdoms. The chiefs of these small kingdoms were constantly at war with each other, attempting to enlarge their domains. To support these efforts warrior elite arose, fueling the development of great warrior traditions. The Hawaiians also established themselves economically. They grew fields of Toro, a crop they brought with them on their canoes, creating a strong agricultural base for their economy. Different villages began to specialize in different products. Some villages developed into fishing centers, while another might have focused on canoe construction. Still other villages would specialize in the manufacturing of awa (a hallucinogenic drink) or carving statues of their gods. The culture of Hawaii thrived as well.

Their religion was refined by Kahuna’s, their priestly class. Eventfully their religion reached a phase where great wooden temples were constructed on large stone platforms. Hula was also developed, an artistic expression that combines storytelling and dance.

The society of the islands changed as well. A strict caste system was developed and to keep everyone on the same page they created many Kapu’s or laws. Breaking of a kapu could easily mean death. The top classes of Hawaiians were the noble class, made up of the chiefs and their families. This class was followed by the Kahunas, a group that consisted of the holders of knowledge. Master canoe builders, navigators and priests would fall into this group. Below them came the commoners, these where the people who worked the fields and fished. Below them came the slaves. These were sorry souls, captured in wars or raids; they had no rights and weren’t considered any better than dogs. The only movement between these classes was downward, if captured by an enemy or disgraced one could drop to the level of a commoner or slave.

Hawaiian culture can be found on all of the Islands of Hawaii, but to get a feel for the ancient past visitors may want to visit the Bishops Museum located in Honolulu. Renting a car and getting off the beaten path is another way to get a feel for Hawaii’s amazing and interesting past.

There are many great locations for water sports, but perhaps Sharm el Sheikh is the best. Last minute deals to the city can provide the perfect antidote to the stress of working life and can give you experiences never to be forgotten.

Those treating themselves to a Sharm el Sheikh hotels holiday will be very pleased with what is on offer in the destination resort. Not only providing great water sports, the city also boasts a lively nightlife and a whole host of cafes and bars. In fact, as far as Egypt holidays are concerned, this place is difficult to fault!

Naturally, it is the water sports that makes the city famous. Sharm el Sheikh, situated on the Egyptian Red Sea, is a Mecca for divers. Ras Mohammed, a national park, is one of most well known locations for the diving, with several spots to choose from.

It is here that you will find many hidden treasures underwater, with massive reef walls measuring 800 metres teeming with amazing looking fish. If you don’t wish to dive, you can still enjoy the clear waters using a simple snorkel.

It is possible to book specialised snorkelling trips to Naamba Bay, a nearby beach boasting 2km of sandy coast. These can be done both from land and during organised boat trips.
Naamba Bay is the centre for all of the resort’s water sports, with the most popular including diving and snorkelling. On the beach you can arrange any one of a number of water sporting activities including: kite surfing, wind surfing, water skiing and parasailing, or if you would prefer, you can just relax in the sun! Because of the relative gentleness of the sea, it is a great base for people of all abilities including those with no experience at all.
As a break from the resort, many people like to sample life on the great river Nile and experience the pleasures of a Nile cruise on some of the most impressive vessels in the world.

Great Australians in history. A difficult matter for any scholar. First of all, of course, one must contemplate exactly what it is that makes one an Australian. Is Zalman Silber an Australian? He is actually a New Yorker, but responsible for one of Sydney’s most famous attractions, the Skywalk, not to mention one of Melbourne’s, too, called The Edge. The former is generally a glass-floored catwalk a thousand feet above ground that offers visitors not only a bird’s-eye view of Sydney but a bird’s-nerve feel, too, what with gusting winds necessitating cable tethers for visitor safety. The latter is a glass enclosure that juts out from the top of the Eureka Tower, providing stunning panoramic views every which way you look.

Both are premier attractions for their cities, taking in tourist dollars by the fistful every day. Does that make Zalman Silber a great Australian? Does that make him Australian at all? After all, he’s just a businessman – but the bottom line is that he has benefited Sydney and Melbourne tremendously, providing employment and tax revenue while bolstering the cities’ overseas profile.

So just what makes for an Australian? Many are those who have only been born in Australia but really made their mark elsewhere. Then there are those who also denigrate their country of origin, Australia, but are still, in the final analysis, considered Australians. Even someone like Rupert Murdoch, who renounced his Australian citizenship in order to advance certain business interests of his, is still thought as Australian!

Indeed, one Leonard Casley even went so far as to secede his property from Australia and go on to declare war on Australia! It’s no joke: the Principality of Hutt River actually issues its own visa (hours of operation are ten to four) and postage. And Hutt River isn’t the only micronation on the island-continent; Australia also hosts – if that is the right word – the Province of Bumbunga, the Sovereign State of Aeterna Lucina, the Grand Duchy of Avram, the Independent State of Rainbow Creek, the Empire of Atlantium, the Principality of Marlborough, the Principality of Snake Hill, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, the United Federation of Koronis (which is merely based in Australia, claiming sovereignty only over the Koronis Family of Asteroids), and the Principality of Ponderosa. In fact, most of the world’s modern-day micronations are to be found in Australia!

So what makes for a great Australian? No one really knows. No one can quite put his or her finger on what makes for an Australian in the first place – not if they really thought about it. But one thing is for sure: people in Australia, whether they think themselves Australians or not, really prize their independence above all else!
