Trekkers need to carry along with them lot of equipments and gears as they need to be well prepared for overcoming all sorts of challenges. Survival kits, compasses, clothes, gears for camping, medicines, shoes and dry food packets are items that every trekker will have in his backpack. Waterproof shoes are advisable for hiking. Special emphasis is paid to shoes to see that they are well fitted and does not produce blisters in the long run. Then there are other items like rain jackets, warm jerseys, sleeping bags, lightweight gloves, sun hat, scarf, sunglasses, innerwear, woolen socks or cotton inner socks, hiking shorts, long pants and thermal wear if needed. The list is endless. As treks are done throughout the day and night, its necessary to get along with you torches, headlamps, toiletries , water bottles, plastic bags for keeping dry items and the most important item which is first aid kit.

Trekking is walking and applies to journeys made on foot. These journeys are mostly done in places where no other means of transport are available. It may involve walking for a number of days on foot. During trekking, there are always possibilities of having either designated, well laid out routes and then there is another chance of encountering un-charted and un-designated paths also. Trekking holidays or walking holidays vary vastly from simple relaxing treks from tea house to tea house like on an Everest base camp trek or an Annapurna trek to treks in a more demanding climate such as the Saharah for desert trekking. Some people go trekking for the challenge. Examples of trekking peaks include Aconcagua, Island peak, Mera peak, ojos del salado and treks to Kilimanjaro. All of these peaks despite their lack of technicality are all high altitude peaks. So precautions need to be taken before attempting them. British explorer Philip de-Beger who is probably best know for his high altitude exploits having led several expeditions to 8,000m peaks in the Himalayas and the karakoram. His other feats include establishing new extreme climbing routes in England, Scotland, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Emirates and Oman. This year he was awarded grants from the mount Everest fund and Shipton Tillman fund for a daring expedition to climb an unclimbed peak high in the karakoram.

He has also had success in the Arctic. In 2009 as part of a small team Philip skied 300 miles unsupported in across frozen sea ice in order to link the two most northern Inuit communities in the Canadian Arctic by ski. He arrived with a day to spare despite having to deal with open water and polar bears.

In February 2012 Philip will be leading an expedition to climb Ojos Del Salado. Ojos is the world highest volcano at 6,892m. This also makes it the highest mountain in Chile and one of the “second seven summits”. The mountain is a serious undertaking. There are only two spaces on the expedition remaining. Potential candidates will need a good level of fitness and drive. The final section before the summit involves a short 30m rock climb so experience of scrambling or basic climbing experience would be advantageous.
